So I've been having this problem with my internet access. Basically, my adsl1 connection drops periodically - around 7am and 6pm every night. Weird huh
I have a Sky box, requiring a (filtered) connection to a phone socket. I have a monitored home alarm system requiring an unfiltered phone socket (the adsl filter is hardwired to the main board of the alarm). Oh and I have my broadband.
My ISP blames the alarm, the alarm people blame the telco (BT) and BT blame the ISP. On balance and having been peed off with my ISP anyway, I switch.
Same problem.
Anyway, long story short - the culpritt was bell wire from my phone socket. Not the most likely of candidates is it?
UK phone wiring is for 2 cable, connected to block 2 and 5 of the socket. Block 3 is the old bell wire, which can act like a enormous antena and push the noise on your broadband line up to the point that it disconnects.
With the disconnection happening every day at the same time, my money was on the alarm but there you go.
Incidentally, the bell wire is blue.
You could of course buy the new BT Interstial plate (I-Plate) which filters the bell wire out of your adsl but they are only available from BT, cost £30 (if you can get one) plus installation.
I'll point out for completeness that householders are not permitted to touch the phone wiring before the termination block in the master socket of the house. Basically you can do what you like from the master socket onwards but before that is owned by your telco.
Lucky for me that when I opened the master socket to safety inspect it, i found the bell wire to be loose. I will of course notify BT and ask them to come and refit the wire, just as soon as I can.
