So i have this computer:

MOBO: Asus P5Q
CPU: Intel Quad 2 Core Q9400
Graphic: XFX 8800 GTS
Power: Nox 750w
Ram: Corsair Dual 1GB XMS2 800Mhz

I'm not really sure of the improvement of buying new hardware here, so how long is the rig last?

It's a big tower with 4 fan's, yes i would probably only put more ram if i switch to a 64bits system.

Yup more ram is definitley needed. As an example Civilization V requires minimum 2gb ram (4 gb rec).... well according to the box anyway. Not sure about the graphic card. The 8800GTS is not exactly new, but still usually above min specs fo recent games.

How long a rig will last depends totally what you want to run on it.
That's something we cant answer....only you know what you like. ;)

For example, my wife still uses an old Pentium 4 that I built in 2000. She doesn't play 3D games so it's fine for her.
However the computer that I built 2 years ago for my gaming will need upgrading very soon, or replacing if I can afford it.

As has been mentioned though the RAM is your bottleneck. Get at least another gig. :)

As Stubbie says, it all depends on what your main uses are - there is an extremelywide gulf in hardware required to support simple Office apps on the one hand and HD video editing or 3d graphics at the other end.

Having said all that, bump the RAM to 4Gig (or 6Gig+ if your OS is 64-bit), and get a mid-range DX11 graphics card only if your frame rate in games is causing problems.

The bottom line is that you only spend money to solve a problem, and for no other reason.

Well i can play Civ 5 with 2GB ram with no problems and so with any other games, i know the GPU is not new don't have DirectX11 and some other stuff, the thing is i only have a 19" LCD screen i only play with 1440x990 i can handle anything i play now, i think i'm gonna wait for some more hardware updates :)

I switched to 64bit windows 7 some time ago and currently running 6Gb with a 1Gb graphics card... it all runs sweet :)

my rig
mobo:Asrock p43r1600twins
cpu:E8400 3mhz running at 3.4mhz(more then enough for me)
graphics:ati 4850 half a gig memory
ram 2gig kingston hyperx 1024 (makes 2gig mem)1 gig is realy low
running windows 7 home edit

maybe a low pc but mines runs every game i give him :)i dont need an i5 or i7 processor:p

on how long your rig runs depends on what you do with it.
if nothing breaks sure a year or 2 ,get 1 gig more mem and your pc runs more smoothly then it does now
